"Europe must improve its competitiveness if it wants to support its social model, invest in defence and protect itself against the climate crisis. This is the main subject of the informal European Council meeting, which will begin shortly," Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Thursday, upon his arrival for the European leaders' summit at Alden Biesen Castle in Belgium.

"Greece comes to this discussion having submitted very specific proposals for reducing European bureaucracy, for making the Single Market function better and to ultimately enable competitiveness to benefit both businesses and European consumers," the prime minister underlined and added:

"Competitiveness in itself is a fairly abstract concept if it is not combined with more and better jobs and, above all, with better and lower prices in the European market in order to address the high cost of living crisis. If this does not happen, it will be difficult to have the social support that is essential for the crucial decisions that need to be taken from now on.

"I will have the opportunity to focus more on energy market issues. It is clear that today the energy market in the EU is not functioning satisfactorily. We need greater integration in the energy market, so that we have lower energy prices, both in Europe and for European consumers, but also for European businesses."
