With a strong focus on quality, transparency, and innovation, the San Marino Ship Register (SMSR) aims to become the preferred choice for shipowners seeking a trusted and distinct alternative – starting with Greece.

In the global shipping sector, where credibility, speed, and innovation are essential, San Marino is seeking to rewrite the rules. Under the leadership of Gianluca Tucci, Director General of SMSR and San Marino’s representative to the IMO, the small European nation is introducing a new high-standard flag that stands for neutrality, regulatory compliance, and personalized service.

Speaking to "Forbes”, Tucci and Flag Director, Engineer Nicola Camorali, explain the principles behind SMSR, how it stands out from other registries, and why Greece is at the heart of their strategy.

Why San Marino is entering shipping

"The decision to establish a national ship registry is based on the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea,” says Tucci. "Every country has the right to access the sea. San Marino, known for good governance and international engagement, wants to bring its values –quality, transparency, and service– into the shipping sector”.

This flag doesn’t aim for quantity, but quality. "We don’t want to be the biggest – we want to be the best,” he emphasizes.

A boutique flag for demanding shipowners

What sets SMSR apart is its highly personal approach. "We care deeply about quality and service,” Tucci notes. "While other flags focus on volume, we focus on clear rules, efficient procedures, and direct communication”.

San Marino’s political neutrality is also a major asset. "We’re not involved in geopolitical games – and that builds trust, which is priceless in shipping,” he adds.

A strategic partnership with Greek shipping

A major step forward for SMSR is its exclusive partnership with GMCG for the Greek market. Tucci calls it "both strategic and symbolic”.

"Greece is a maritime powerhouse. This partnership brings us closer to Greek shipowners, offering direct access to our services with local support. It shows how seriously we take the Greek market”.

    Greece at the center

"Greek shipping is built on tradition, leadership, and innovation,” Tucci says. "Partnering with Greek shipowners is crucial. We know their standards – and we believe we can meet them”.

    Fast, flexible, and supportive

Engineer Nicola Camorali explains that SMSR was designed to be fast and efficient. "Shipowners don’t just want paperwork – they want proactive support that prevents problems”.

He adds that SMSR provides quick certification, responsive service, and direct technical contact. "We see ourselves as partners, not bureaucrats.”

    Looking ahead

Tucci sees SMSR becoming a global benchmark for quality flag services. "We’re not chasing numbers – we’re building something meaningful, with continuous investment in tech and compliance”.

Greece will remain at the core. "We’re proud to build lasting partnerships with Greek shipowners. They raise the bar – and we intend to rise to it”.
