Androulakis: Our focus should be on local government and participatory politics

One of the most critical institutitons standing by citizens is local government, which must become more effective and stronger, PASOK-Movement for Change (KINAL) leader Nikos Androulakis said on Sunday.
Speaking at a party event on local government titled "We strengthen local government, starting for a new change", he said, "A new start can only occur with strong institutions that will place society squarely in the center. One of the most critical institutions standing by citizens on a daily basis is local government, and that is why it must become more effective and stronger."
Changes, he added, cannot happen with the corporate state that ruling New Democracy believes in and is the root of the problem, nor with ministries isolated behind their walls, or in glass offices of power consultants. That does not make a participatory state, he said, citing as example the recent proposal to change local government's election system.
"Our position is clear: democracy in local government is not an administrative detail. It is an institutional win. And we will not allow it to collapse by experiments in party politics," he added. He also noted that in recent decades Greece had become an unequal Greece, instead of a multicentered one in which the state cooperation with local government to promote regional development.
"We need a national plan of regional reconstruction. And this must become a national priority, not a footnote in some business plan," he urged, calling for decentralization, popular participation, and social justice.
