"Almost two years after the revelation of the illegal surveillance scandal that embarrassed and continues to embarrass our country internationally, the government of New Democracy is still doing all it can to cover up the affair and create obstacles to its investigation," main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance underlined in a statement on Wednesday.

"In contrast, the US government has banned the use of surveillance software like Predator over the past year, announced a visa ban on those involved in the production, marketing and dissemination of the illegal software, and yesterday, taking another decisive step, imposed draconian economic sanctions on the Intellexa consortium, its main shareholders and its Greek subsidiary," SYRIZA added, pointing out that "sanctions on the Greek Intellexa are related to the fact that it exported its surveillance tools in authoritarian regimes."

Moreover, SYRIZA-PA accused the government of significant delays on the issue, adding:

"Our democracy must stop being stigmatised by the Mitsotakis government's phone tapping scandal. The country's humiliation must stop."
