Defence Minister Nikos Dendias on Wednesday had bilateral meetings with Ghana's Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul, Ghanaian Foreign Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwe, as well as the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean Pierre Lacroix and Cypriot Defence Minister Michalis Giorgallas, on the sidelines of a United Nations ministerial meeting for the Support of Peace Operations held in the African country.

On the occasion of the meeting, Dendias recalled in his statement that "our country seeks an important role within the framework of the United Nations Organisation. We are running our three campaigns, the campaign for the Security Council, the campaign for the presidency of the General Assembly and the campaign for the Human Rights Council.

He also estimated that "there were results at a bilateral level with Ghana. I had the opportunity to promote the issue of signing a military training memorandum between our two countries. This is in line with a memorandum of understanding I had signed with Ghana as foreign minister during my previous visit," he added.

"Ghana is a country that is important for Greece. It is a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, a signatory to UNCLOS, the Convention on the Law of the Sea and is also one of the important members of the Association of Friends of UNCLOS. Accordingly, I would like to say that it is good to intensify our bilateral contacts with this country, which also plays an important role for the peace effort in Sub-Saharan Africa," he commented.
