Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis on Tuesday welcomed an extension of the humanitarian pause in the Middle East, in a statement as he arrived for a NATO foreign ministers' meeting held in Brussels. He also expressed hope that Sweden will soon be a new member of the Alliance.

"First, I would like to warmly welcome the extension of the humanitarian pause in the Middle East. The images reaching us from the release of the hostages, the supply of humanitarian aid and the efforts being made on the ground make us a little more optimistic that we will be able to address this great humanitarian crisis. And, of course, they give us a small margin that allows us to work on a permanent peace in the region.

In the midst of the crisis in the Middle East, but also the crisis that continues at length in Ukraine, the North Atlantic Alliance is continuing its course with fortitude, unity, with solidarity for the countries that are being tested. We will continue on this course. We hope to soon officially welcome Sweden as a new member of the Alliance. We will also have a discussion on Ukraine and on the Western Balkans. Greece has always been at the forefront of the discussion on the acccession of the Western Balkan countries to the Alliance and the European Union," Gerapetritis said.

He noted that these discussions were taking place in light of the 75th anniversary since the foundation of NATO, which had made such a decisive contribution ot the world security architecture and will continue to do so.
