Environment & Energy Minister Theodoros Skylakakis referred extensively to offshore wind parks on Thursday, while addressing the plenary during a discussion on his ministry's bill that includes several environmental and energy provisions.

Greece presents a significant wind potential, noted the minister, which makes it "unique throughout the Mediterranean for the development of off-shore wind parks."

The main advantage is the strong, lasting winds, he noted, which means "wind parks can operate for up to 4,500 hours, plus are also a short distance from a mainland area."

There is international interest in Greece's offshore wind parks potential, "which can generate great added value in our economy overall - if planned correctly."

This system, he added, can render Greece an exporter of energy, and "can give us a strategic character in green, safe energy, certainly in Europe, if not globally."

Speaking on the same day at an event held by the Hellenic Wind Energy Association (HWEA), Skylakakis outlined the government's policy on offshore wind parks, and he noted that consecutive tenders for these will be conducted on clearly defined timetables, to allow supply chain companies to invest.

In this direction, the government will undertake additional actions such as relevant studies, data collection and licensing, in view of making them available to all interested prospective producers of wind energy, "thus offering them fully developed projects, with most - or all - of the environmental licensing part completed in advance."

Developing a domestic supply chain should be accompanied by a parallel development of a supply chain for the construction and servicing of the productive facilities.

Greece "can become a protagonist, for many decades, in a very large sector, with tens of thousands of jobs, with huge energy investments, with a dramatic reduction of the country's dependence on energy imports", stressed Skylakakis.
