Chrysochoidis: 'We want to wake the sleeping giant that is the ESY'

The government seeks to make the Greek National Health System (ESY) more attractive to the citizens, through the hiring next year of 6,500 doctors and nurses, including 250 assistant professors, Health Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis announced on Monday at the 22nd Healthworld Conference.
"We want to wake the sleeping giant that is ESY," said the minister at the conference, which this year is on the topic "Making Healthcare Reform a Political and Investment Priority" and organised by the American-Hellenic Chamber of Commerce at a central Athens hotel.
The minister also announced changes in the way that hospital emergency duty was organised and promised that issues concerning healthcare will be "fixed from the start" and "not patched up", pointing out that the problems in healthcare have remained the same for more than 30 years.
Chrysochoidis said the ESY had gone into "stagnation" and this had led to an inefficient system that fell short of requirements. He promised structural changes in ESY's management, changes in hospital administrations based on assessments and changes in the way hospital budgets were drawn up.
On pharmaceuticals, he promised access to medicines with transparency and support for investments in the pharmaceutical industry to produce generic drugs.
