SYRIZA's proposal for expatriate voting rights is unconstitutional but also deeply insulting, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said following a meeting with Archbishop Elpidophoros and attending an event at the Greek consulate in New York.

In statements after the event on Thursday evening, the prime minister said that the proposal "directly and brutally insults the Greek expatriate community ... It is deeply offensive to those who choose to exercise their right to vote outside Greece. It basically tells them that they cannot vote for the prime minister, but only for some deputies, so we are talking about 'second class' citizens and a vote that is not equal."

According to sources, the government's proposal on the same issue, where the vote of Greeks abroad will count the same as other votes, is almost complete. They said that the prime minister will soon initiate a round of meetings with main opposition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras and other political leaders to reach an agreement. As Mitsotakis said in his speech to Greek expatriates in Astoria on Wednesday night, "the law on voting for expatriates requires 200 MPs but it should be approved by all 300 deputies."
