Greek population decreased by 58.449 people in 2024

The population of the country decreased further in 2024 - by the equivalent of an entire town, or 58,449 people - as deaths once again outnumbered births. At the same time, marriages declined, while civil partnerships also moved downward. In contrast, divorces recorded an increase.
Specifically, according to the Hellenic Statistical Authority's (ELSTAT) survey on the natural movement of the population, births in Greece in 2024 amounted to 68,467 (35,216 boys and 33,251 girls), marking a decrease of 4.2% compared to 2023, when there were 71,455 births (36,622 boys and 34,833 girls). Stillbirths are not included in these figures; in 2024, there were 454 stillbirths, an increase of 5.1% compared to 2023, when there were 432.
Deaths reached 126,916 (64,144 men and 62,772 women), showing a decrease of 0.9% compared to 2023, when there were 128,101 deaths (64,900 men and 63,201 women). Infant deaths under the age of one amounted to 261, raising the infant mortality rate (infant deaths under the age of one per 1,000 live births) from 3.5 in 2023 to 3.8 in 2024.
Marriages amounted to 36,649 (19,695 religious and 16,954 civil), registering a decrease of 9.2 percent compared to 2023, when there were 40,351 marriages (21,402 religious and 18,949 civil). Civil partnerships totaled 14,486, showing a decrease of 3.9 percent compared to 2023, when there were 15,069. In 2024, marriages included 101 between men and 81 between women. Similarly, in the same year, civil partnerships included 192 between men and 96 between women.
Divorces amounted to 15,532, marking an increase of 2.8 percent compared to 2023 (15,114 divorces). Regarding the type of divorce, in 2024, 12,805 were consensual (82.4 percent) and 1,886 contentious (12.1 percent), while in 841 cases (5.4 percent) the type of divorce was not declared. Of the divorces issued in 2024, 66.4 percent concerned marriages that lasted 10 years or more (10,314 divorces).
The divorce-to-marriage ratio was 42.4 per 100 marriages in 2024, compared to 37.5 in 2023, 33.4 in 2022, 34.2 in 2021, and 41.2 in 2020.
