The new Road Traffic Code, voted into law in June 2025, went into full effect on Saturday, September 13, aiming to reduce road accidents and fatalities in Greece.
The Code's key change is the introduction of stiffer penalties and removing of driver's licenses for longer terms for repeat offenders, instead of consolidating fines and sanctions.
It will work on the basis of tiered fines, with repeat violations rising significantly and including prosecution by court.
Among the violations it addresses are use of cellphone, lack of helmet for motorcyclists, non-use of seat belts for driver and passenger, driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding, violating traffic light, violating a Stop sign, driving without a license, obstructing train movement, obstructing public transportation (exceptions, particularly for disabled people or at nighttime), and parking at spaces reserved for the disabled.
