SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Sokratis Famellos on Wednesday underlined the need to support the local communities and the restoration of the enivronment during his visit to the fire stricken areas of eastern Attica.

According to SYRIZA, Famellos "conducted an on-site inspection in the areas affected in the municipalities of Lavreotiki and Saronikos, and spoke with local government officials, professionals, and residents of the area."

SYRIZA-PA leader "criticised the fact that, once again, despite the government’s grand words, the country proved to be unprepared."

In statements to the media, Famellos noted "While the climate crisis requires a strong state, Mr. Mitsotakis despises anything public, such as fire prevention, the organisation of the State for firefighting, and restoration efforts. According to data up to the end of July, our country has far more burned areas this year than last year, while compared with the other Mediterranean countries we are experiencing much larger fires" he said.

He also said that there is a significant delay in the state’s preparedness and explained: "There is a serious deficit and major weakness in fire prevention due to insufficient forest services. There is also an issue with coordination in firefighting and preparation, as the government confronts contract firefighters with riot police and tear gas when they demand permanent employment."
