Shaping the sustainable future: PCT as a catalyst for climate and digital transition

As global trade routes evolve under new geopolitical, environmental, and technological pressures, ports are redefining their role – not just as logistics hubs but as agents of sustainable transformation. In the Eastern Mediterranean, Piraeus Container Terminal (PCT), operator of Piers II and III, stands out as a prime example of how private investment can drive this shift.
Since becoming a subsidiary of COSCO SHIPPING Ports in 2010, PCT has invested over €600 million in infrastructure, technology, and equipment. These investments quadrupled handling capacity, elevated the port into Europe’s top five, and established it as a vital transshipment hub between Asia and Europe.
Green transition at port scale
PCT has fully electrified a major part of its equipment: 30 quay cranes, 22 RMGs, and 45 e-RTGs now operate solely on electric power. This shift cuts maintenance costs and reduces exposure to fuel price volatility. In 2022, a telemetry system was introduced to track energy consumption and link it to productivity. In 2023, it expanded to cover all buildings and facilities.
Next comes a €48 million project to build a High Voltage Substation and implement On-Shore Power Supply (OPS) for vessels. Upon completion, Piraeus will join the ranks of a few, but growing, European ports offering OPS.
Climate resilience and digital innovation
PCT has integrated climate risk into operations since 2017, when it partnered with the National Observatory of Athens to launch an on-site meteorological station. In 2024, it added 22 AI-powered weather monitoring units to forecast microclimates in real time.
Its proprietary Terminal Operating System (TOS), in development since 2010, manages container and truck movements, improving efficiency and reducing emissions. Meanwhile, the HPCS platform digitally connects customs, shipping lines, and logistics providers, minimizing red tape and enhancing transparency.
Economic and social impact
From 2009 to 2023, PCT’s contribution to public revenue –including concession fees, taxes, and insurance– reached €981 million. In 2023-2024 alone, the company signed €255 million worth of contracts with over 600 mainly local suppliers. Since 2010, over €850,000 has been donated to social causes, primarily in education, welfare, and the environment.
Piraeus is not the only port undergoing transformation – but PCT’s strategy of investment, digitization, and environmental leadership places it at the forefront of Europe’s port evolution.
