Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Tuesday highlighted the urgency of upgrading the domestic railway network from Athens to Thessaloniki using the most modern means, but also to make it safe, while chairing a broad meeting at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport that was also attended by the government's vice president, Kostis Hatzidakis.
"We must move faster, this is what citizens demand of us," the prime minister said, reiterating that the government must continue to contend with the chronic afflictions of the deep state. He announced that in early April there will be a comprehensive presentation of the new actions in the field of public transport, emphasising that "by 2027 the state of public transport will be completely transformed".
Mitsotakis spoke of the addition of new buses, as well as the hiring of new drivers, the plans to upgrade the trains on Metro Line 1, as well as the planned interventions on Metro Lines 2 and 3. The prime minister announced that the new Traffic Code will soon be voted on, while clarifying that this cannot, by itself, solve the problem of road safety, and that a comprehensive reassessment is needed. Moreover, the premier also updated the deadlines for the completion of important infrastructure projects by 2027. Specifically, he said that a significant part of the North Crete Road must be delivered by the end of 2027, while the Patras - Pyrgos road must be completed by 2025, along with works to extend the Thessaloniki Metro. Subsequently, within 2026, there is the planned delivery of the E65 motorway, followed by the Flyover in Thessaloniki in 2027.
