President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou, emphasized that strengthening democracy is existential during times of upheaval and risks. In her speech at the event commemorating 50 years since Greece's reaffirmation of the European Convention on Human Rights and 75 years since the establishment of the Council of Europe, she highlighted the power of democracy.
She stated, " Democracy is a continuous exercise for all of us, as we all participate in and shape it as individuals and members of the social community, in accordance with our Constitution.” Sakellaropoulou noted that one of the first actions of the Greek national unity government after the fall of the junta was the reaffirmation of the European Convention on Human Rights. " Greece's return to the Council of Europe, from which it had been effectively expelled a few years earlier, and its subsequent accession to the European Union define the post-junta dynamics and evolution of the country. They emphatically demonstrate the commitment of Greeks to European ideals and a complete, substantial, and non-negotiable understanding of democracy,” she said.
