Marinakis: Immediate price reductions on basic consumer products

Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis began a press briefing on Monday by referred to the implementation of price reductions in basic consumer products sold in supermarkets that is now starting.

"By the end of October, the first 120 or so product codes will be available with new reduced prices that will be the start of this initiative, while more than 600 product codes from various suppliers will be gradually added to the initiative," he said.

"The price reductions for these first 120 codes will range from 6% to 15% and already the supermarket chains have informed the General Secretariat of Commerce about the relevant lists of product codes. The government continues to boost citizens' disposable income. In particular, the minimum wage has increased from 650 to 830 euros and the average wage has risen from 1,046 euros to 1,300, with the aim of reaching 950 and 1,500, respectively, by the end of the four-year period," Marinakis added, while also pointing to 60 taxes reduced by the government.

Asked whether the government is optimistic or pessimistic in view of Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis' meeting with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan, he replied that there is no point in being either one or the other.

"We certainly shouldn't be naive. Dialogue means neither retreat nor naivety. The issue for us is only the sole difference, the determination of EEZ and continental shelf. There is nothing else that could be put on the table," he said.
