There was no active front still burning at around noon on Tuesday in the large fire that broke out shortly before 9:00 in the morning at the Souda naval station, the Fire Brigade informed the Athens-Macedonian News Agency.

The mayor of Chania, Panagiotis Simandirakis, had earlier evacuated school buildings close to where the fire had broken out as a precaution, while the competent civil protection services in the Municipality of Chania were on full alert.

A message was also sent via the emergency number 112 to the residents in the vicinity of Souda naval base, instructing them to move away from their area.
