The trial of the first compensation case filed by families of the victims in the fatal 2023 train crash in Tempi is to continue on April 5, after the conclusion of the first day of the hearing on Friday. The trial before the first-instance court began with the consideration and rejection of a request for its postponement filed by the defendants, Hellenic Railways Organisation (OSE) and Hellenic Train.
The lawsuit was filed by the four relatives of Intercity 62 inspector Yiannis Kariotis, one of the 57 victims of the train collision, who are seeking one million euros in compensation for moral damages and the pain they suffered from the loss of their loved one. The four plaintiffs were present in court on Friday.
At the beginning of the trial, the lawyers of the two companies requested that the court should not proceed to try the case because they had not been informed about the contents of the criminal case prepared by the examining magistrate of Larisa, in which the responsibilities of each person involved are identified.
On their part, the relatives objected, claiming that the trial is civil suit and therefore not related to the criminal case, while emphasising that the appeal is based on the opinion of the Committee of Experts, which was made public.
The court rejected the defendants' request and set the date of April 5 for continuing the hearing.
