Responding to the withdrawal of MEP Stelios Kouloglou from the Europarliamentary group of main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance to become independent, sources within the party on Monday asked him to return his seat to SYRIZA-PA.

"Kouloglou should hand back his seat to the party he was elected with," the same sources said, in response to Kouloglou's letter announcing his decision.

Kouloglou announced that he is withdrawing from main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance's group in the Europarliament and becoming independent, in an open letter to party leader Stefanos Kasselakis on Monday.

In his letter, Kouloglou cited a "lack of serious opposition and the projection of the new  president's personal life in public dialogue as the main reason for the stagnation of the party in the local government elections.
